It seems to me that, in a general way, to the extent that an historical analysis (or any other kind of analysis) aids ‘understanding’ of organizations then it may indeed help to inform the actions of those who participate in organizations. But that is very far from raiding such analyses for ‘how to’ tips of the type often sought by managers. Indeed, one of the reasons for the demise of the ‘golden age’ of organization studies was, according to Greenwood and Hinings (2002), the shift of the discipline into the institution of the business school, which tended to conceptualize the subject in terms of its contribution to managerial and organizational efficiency.

The second reason for the failure of organization studies, or at least contemporary organization studies of culture, to engage with history is epistemological. Rowlinson and Hassard believe that much culture writing has succumbed to postmodernism, which is sceptical about the epistemological status of historical events. If taken to its logical conclusion this means that all history is subjective – history is what the historian makes it. By contrast, whilst recognizing that organizations and their cultures are socially constructed, they argue that the reality of a past need not be abandoned because it has undergone a process of social construction, to do so would result in abandoning historical research.

Sinclair was the Chief of SIS, known, as were his successors, simply as ‘C’. The main intended purpose of the site was to house GC & CS in the event of war breaking out, although at various times it housed other elements of SIS24. The choice of this site is often attributed to its location on the now-defunct Oxford to Cambridge railway line, being thus convenient for the many BP staff drawn from the universities in those cities.
