In his three critiques of the scope of human reason, action and judgement, Kant proposed a new paradigm of nature which attempted to resolve the contradictions or 'antinomies' presented by the positivists. Kant distinguished between mechanisms and organisms. The former were subject to linear cause and effect links. This kind of linear causality predominated in science and accounted for both stability and change in a way that was entirely predictable. Organisms, however, Kant argued, were to be understood in a systemic way.
His contribution was to revisualise mathematics, inventing a form of visible mathematics called topology which describes the mathematics of relationships. Poincare developed this component of mathematics to analyse qualitative features of complex dynamical problems. In this approach Poincare was the first to solve the celebrated three body problem and in doing so probably described the first chaotic attractor, although he didn't call it such. 24 Pattern and form in the arts We have illustrated the way in which the history of thought addressed the two notions which are central to this book - the struggle between structure and pattern, the tension being between determinism and unpredictability.
However, before long, the herbivores become so scarce that the carnivores can no longer sustain themselves, not least because the remaining herbivores are completely hidden by the burgeoning undergrowth. If on the other hand the herbivores evolve strategies for hiding or running away, the balance is restored, at least until the next steps in the evolutionary process. Evolution depends on co-evolution. Theoretical models using computer simulations of populations, gradual change and mutual interdependency provide a number of interesting scenarios.
