Again bespeaks a rhetorical education beyond the selections in Murray's reader. By the time Herman transferred his interest from the debating group of the Young Men's Association to the Ciceronian Debating Society and then to the Philo Logos Society in 1837, he was confident enough in his rhetoric to carry the squabbles of the latter organization into the pages of the Albany Microscope. These fulsome exercises, along with the two "Fragments from a Writing Desk" published in the Democratic Press and Lansingburgh Advertiser in May 1839, paint a vivid portrait of a youthful writer flushed with the rhetorical excesses of his day.

10 A second problem with critical biography comes in the way authorial development is plotted. Because of the powerful mandate to dovetail the development of an author's life with that of the author's works in some meaningful way, the works are generally subjected to a pattern of evolution which makes sense in external terms. His personal identification with the authoritypersuasivenessof extraliteral language becomes so profound that the quest for the figurative underpinnings of literary authority becomes for him the "great art of telling the truth" which he announces in his 1850 essay "Hawthorne and His Mosses" Melville's metaphysics may answer to Hawthorne's 1856 assertion that ''he can neither believe, nor be comfortable in his unbelief" (Leyda, Log II, 529), but exactly the opposite view characterizes his rhetoric: he develops such unshakable faith in his voice, in the authority of his literary language, that his art bobs to the surface, like Queequeg's coffin, in one bold experiment after another, even when his surrounding life seems cloaked in depression.
